Victim-aware case file

The case was quickly described through the name of the man who admitted responsibility. The more accurate starting point is the family whose lives ended: Kimesha Wright, 31, and her children Kimanda Smith, 15; Shara-Lee Smith, reported as 11 by the police and 12 in later court coverage; Rafaella Smith, 5; and Kishawn Henry Jr, 23 months.

Source note: contemporary sources differ on the spelling of Kimesha/Kemesha and Kishawn/Keshawn, and on Shara-Lee’s age. This page uses the Jamaica Constabulary Force spelling while recording the discrepancy rather than presenting one version as uncontested.

The family and the discovery

Kimesha Wright, 31
A mother of four who operated a shop and was studying to become a nurse, according to sentencing coverage.
Kimanda Smith, 15
The eldest child named in police and court reporting.
Shara-Lee Smith, 11 or 12
Her age differs between the JCF charging notice and later newspaper reports.
Rafaella Smith, 5, and Kishawn Henry Jr, 23 months
The two youngest children in the household.

The JCF reported that police were called to the family’s home on the morning of 21 June. All five were found with wounds. The official charging notice and subsequent court reports establish that Barnett, a relative who had been staying at the home, was arrested in Trelawny and charged with five murders. Graphic detail adds nothing necessary to understanding the evidence or the legal outcome and is omitted here.

Chronology

  1. 20–21 June 2022 — The family was killed at the Cocoa Piece home; police discovered the five victims on the morning of 21 June.
  2. 23 June 2022 — Police detained Rushane Barnett in Wilson Run, Trelawny, after a search.
  3. 27 June 2022 — The JCF announced five murder charges and said Barnett had given a caution statement in the presence of counsel.
  4. 28 July 2022 — Barnett pleaded guilty to all five murder counts in the Home Circuit Court. He told the judge the pleas were voluntary.
  5. 20 October 2022 — Justice Leighton Pusey imposed five concurrent life sentences and set parole eligibility after 61 years and eight months.
  6. September 2024 — During a sentence appeal, assigned counsel advised the Court of Appeal that he could identify no legal basis to disturb the sentence. Barnett declined to abandon the appeal and requested different counsel.

The guilty pleas

The prosecution initially served notice that it would seek the death penalty. Barnett entered five guilty pleas in July 2022 through a voluntary bill of indictment, a procedure that allowed the matter to proceed directly in the Home Circuit Court. The death-penalty request was later withdrawn.

A guilty plea is a conviction; it is not merely an allegation. At the same time, this page does not reproduce claims about motive as if they explained or mitigated the killings. Reports of Barnett’s account were part of the sentencing record, not an excuse for the five deaths.

Sentencing

Justice Pusey imposed life imprisonment on each of the five counts, with the terms to run concurrently. The court fixed the minimum period before parole eligibility at 61 years and eight months. Jamaican reporting recorded that the judge considered the gravity of the offenses, the breach of family trust and the absence of remorse. He also emphasized remembering Wright and her children.

The word “concurrent” means the five life terms run at the same time; it does not erase four of the convictions. Each victim is represented by a separate count and sentence.

The sentence appeal

In September 2024, Court of Appeal proceedings focused on whether Barnett would continue challenging the length of the sentence. His court-appointed attorney told the panel that, after reviewing the case, he found no legal ground to attack Justice Pusey’s ruling. Barnett did not accept that position and asked for new counsel.

That proceeding should not be reported as a successful appeal or as a dismissal. It documented an appeal still being pursued at that stage. A search of official judicial material and major Jamaican reporting available through 6 October 2026 did not locate a later final decision. The last verified public position used here is therefore: conviction and sentence stand, while the publicly documented appeal record remains incomplete.

Current status

Adjudicated: five guilty pleas and five concurrent life sentences, with parole eligibility after 61 years and eight months.

No dispute located in the reviewed sources changes the fact of the guilty pleas or the sentence imposed in October 2022. The page will be corrected if an official later appellate disposition is identified.
