Israel Keyes

Israel Keyes was arrested in Alaska in March 2012 in connection with the abduction and murder of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig. During months of interviews with investigators, Keyes confessed to a string of other murders committed across the United States since 2001, describing himself as deliberately random in his choice of victims to avoid detection.

A meticulous pattern

Keyes told investigators he buried "murder kits" containing supplies in advance at locations across the country, which he would use during later trips unconnected to his home or routine, making his crimes unusually difficult to trace.

Confirmed and suspected victims

Investigators confirmed Keyes's involvement in three murders, including Koenig's, and believe he was responsible for as many as eleven in total based on his own statements, though several suspected victims have never been identified.

Death and unresolved questions

Keyes died by suicide in his Anchorage jail cell in December 2012, before facing trial. The FBI has continued to release information from his case in hopes of identifying additional victims.
