The Kidnapping and Murder of Five La Chorrera Youths

Between October 2010 and September 2011, five young business owners and students of Chinese descent were kidnapped for ransom in La Chorrera and killed. Their families' search ended when the victims were found concealed beneath a rented house.

Judgment boundary: the 2018 trial sentence was modified on appeal. This page uses the final 2020 ruling: four people remained convicted, two earlier convictions were reversed, and Gilberto Ventura Ceballos's liability was limited by the terms of his extradition.

Five lives, named

The victims were Yessenia Argelis Loo Kam, 18; Yong Jian Wu, known as Ken, 27; Samy Zeng Chen; Georgina del Carmen Lee Chen; and Joel Mauricio Liu Wong. They owned or worked in mobile-phone businesses in La Chorrera and were abducted in three episodes between 2010 and 2011.

Yessenia disappeared on October 20, 2010. Yong Jian was lured to what appeared to be a phone purchase on December 9. Samy, Georgina and Joel were taken together on September 7, 2011, while traveling toward their university. In each episode, the kidnappers contacted relatives and demanded ransom.

The house in El Trapichito

The victims were held at a rented house in El Trapichito. Despite ransom negotiations and payments, none returned alive. The case broke open after Alcibíades Méndez was detained on September 14, 2011 and led investigators to the property.

Authorities found the five victims buried beneath different parts of the house. The discovery ended nearly a year of uncertainty for the first family and exposed the three abductions as one connected criminal operation. Reporting recorded $243,000 in ransom payments across the cases.

Flight, extradition and escapes

Gilberto Ventura Ceballos left Panama and was arrested in the Dominican Republic in November 2011. He voluntarily returned under an extradition arrangement limiting both the covered offenses and the maximum sentence. Those terms later became decisive on appeal.

While awaiting judgment, Ventura escaped from La Joyita prison in December 2016 and was recaptured in Costa Rica in September 2017. After conviction he escaped again from La Nueva Joya in February 2020 and was recaptured in Chiriquí nine days later. Those escapes produced separate criminal proceedings and should not be confused with the murder judgment.

The 2018 trial judgment

On June 22, 2018, Panama's Second Superior Court convicted Ventura and Méndez as principals in aggravated intentional homicide and kidnapping and imposed 50-year sentences. Keyla Gisselle Bendibú Salazar and Mario Luis Vega also received 50 years for their roles in the final three kidnappings and murders. Kenny Alexander Bendibú Salazar and Roberto Antonio Mariscal received 15 years as secondary accomplices to homicide.

The same judgment acquitted Félix Manuel Rosario Brujan of homicide and kidnapping and acquitted several defendants of money laundering. These acquittals are part of the record and are not allegations of unresolved guilt.

The final 2020 ruling

On November 13, 2020, the Supreme Court's Criminal Chamber issued a final decision. It reduced Ventura's sentence to 30 years and limited his conviction to the kidnappings and murders of Samy, Georgina and Joel because those were the offenses covered by the Dominican extradition. The chamber left Méndez's 50-year sentence in place for all five victims and also held him responsible for money laundering.

The chamber maintained the 50-year sentences for Keyla Bendibú and Mario Vega in relation to the final three victims. It reversed the convictions of Kenny Bendibú and Roberto Mariscal and acquitted them, finding insufficient proof that they knew the bodies were beneath the floor they had been hired to tile.

What “solved” means here

The final ruling provides a judicially settled account of the core criminal operation, with four defendants convicted under different theories and scopes. It also corrects the misleading shorthand that every 2018 sentence survived unchanged.

The archive therefore classifies the case as solved and adjudicated while preserving the exact limits of each judgment. The victims' identities remain central; the defendants' prison escapes are procedural history, not the story's defining spectacle.
