Status boundary: Court reporting establishes Ritvan Zykaj’s conviction and life sentence. The archive does not reproduce sensational nicknames, does not attribute guilt to relatives and does not treat media shorthand about a family dispute as a complete psychological explanation.

Two related households in Resulaj

Resulaj is a small settlement within the municipality of Selenicë in Vlorë County, southern Albania. Members of the extended Zykaj family lived near one another. On 10 August 2018, relatives had gathered for lunch at another family home.

The prosecution narrative later reported by Albanian media said an argument had occurred after an accusation of poultry theft. Relatives initially tried to calm the dispute. This context appears in the case file, but a quarrel cannot explain or diminish the deliberate killing of eight people.

The attacks on 10 August 2018

Prosecutors recorded that the killings occurred at about 4:45 p.m. at the victims’ homes. The victims belonged to two related households. Contemporary reporting said the assailant left the area carrying the firearm.

The violence was not an exchange of fire or an uncertain confrontation. The later conviction established Zykaj’s criminal responsibility for eight homicides. This page omits graphic details and footage that circulated after the killings.

Eight people remembered by name

The prosecution file named the victims as Demir Zykaj, Perri Zykaj, Azem Zykaj, Afërdita Zykaj, Besim Zykaj, Vasilika Zykaj, Sara Zykaj and Ledion Zykaj.

They included two married couples, their relatives and two children. Some reports published inconsistent ages for the younger victims, so this archive does not repeat a disputed number as certain.

Naming each person matters. The case was often compressed into descriptions of the offender, while the victims became a collective count. The record here keeps the focus on the eight lives lost and on the court’s findings.

Police deployed specialist units and searched the wooded terrain around Selenicë. Reuters reported that Zykaj’s knowledge of the area complicated the operation and that he was detained after approximately twelve hours.

The prosecution account said that, after negotiation, he surrendered at about 4:30 a.m. on 11 August and was formally arrested later that morning. It also said he told police where the firearm had been hidden.

Those details reconcile the broad “captured” language used in early international reports with the more precise local account of a surrender during the continuing police operation.

The physical and testimonial record

The prosecution file described fourteen 7.62-millimetre cartridge cases and other ammunition-related items recovered during scene examinations. It also recorded the seizure of a Model 56 rifle, two magazines and ammunition from the location identified after the arrest.

Investigators interviewed relatives and other witnesses about the family gathering, the earlier dispute, the sounds of gunfire and communications received after the killings. Court reporting said Zykaj admitted the criminal facts.

A reported confession is not treated here as the sole basis for the case. The conviction and corroborating physical record are the stronger basis for classifying responsibility as adjudicated.

The Vlora Court and life imprisonment

Prosecutors charged Zykaj with aggravated murder of two or more people and unlawful possession of a military weapon. Albanian reporting said the seriousness of the charges prevented use of the abbreviated-trial procedure then available for lesser cases.

In 2019, the Vlora Court imposed life imprisonment. Multiple outlets reported the judgment on 6 September. One detailed report stated that the judicial panel had delivered the decision on 10 July; because the public reports differ on the precise announcement date, this archive gives the year as the stable sentencing date.

No later judgment reversing the conviction was located for this update. The page will be revised if an appellate or Supreme Court decision materially changes the recorded status.

Why the case is classified as adjudicated

The identity of the convicted person, the eight victims and the life sentence are consistently reported. Unlike unresolved Albanian files in this archive, the central criminal responsibility for the killings was determined by a court.

“Adjudicated” does not mean every biographical or psychological question is answered. It means the core charged conduct produced a conviction and sentence. The archive deliberately avoids diagnosing the offender or treating a reported insult as a sufficient cause.
