Robert Hansen, the "Butcher Baker"

Robert Hansen ran a respected bakery in Anchorage, Alaska, and was known locally as a quiet family man. Between 1971 and 1983, he abducted women, mostly sex workers and exotic dancers, and released some of them into the Alaska wilderness before hunting them down with a rifle.

Capture

Hansen was arrested in 1983 after a victim escaped and alerted police. A search of his property turned up a map marking the burial locations of his victims, along with jewelry he had kept as trophies.

Confession and sentence

As part of a plea agreement, Hansen confessed to killing seventeen women and raping approximately thirty others, and helped investigators locate remains. He pleaded guilty to four murders and was sentenced to life plus 461 years in prison.

Aftermath

Investigators eventually recovered the remains of twelve of his victims; one, known only as "Eklutna Annie," was identified through genetic genealogy decades later. Hansen died in prison in 2014 at age 75.
