The Von Richthofen Family Murders

On October 31, 2002, engineer Manfred von Richthofen and psychiatrist Marísia von Richthofen were killed in their São Paulo home. Their daughter, 18-year-old Suzane von Richthofen, was later found to have planned the murders together with her boyfriend, Daniel Cravinhos, and his brother, Christian.

Motive and investigation

Investigators established that Suzane had grown resentful of her parents' restrictions on her relationship with Daniel and helped stage the crime scene to look like a robbery gone wrong.

Trial and sentence

In 2006, a jury convicted Suzane von Richthofen and Daniel Cravinhos, sentencing each to 39 years and 6 months in prison; Christian Cravinhos received a slightly shorter sentence.

Where she is now

Suzane von Richthofen has been serving her sentence in open-regime custody since January 2023, the final stage of Brazil's progressive prison system. She has since married, had a child, and largely stays out of the public eye, though the case resurfaced in the media in 2026 following a Netflix documentary revisiting it.
